Thanksgiving Healthy Holiday Eating Tips

The only thing that should be stuffed on Thanksgiving is the turkey! Here are some tips for making healthier choices at your Thanksgiving dinner this year.

7 TIPS FOR HEALTHY HOLIDAY EATING:

  1. Don’t Arrive on An Empty Stomach. Have some vegetable sticks, fresh fruit, a handful of nuts or a small snack before you arrive.

  2. Eat Slowly. It takes 20 minutes for your stomach to tell your brain you are full. When you eat fast, you are more likely to overeat.

  3. Bring a Healthy Dish. Bring a healthy side dish, e.g. salad, to your holiday meal, so you know you have a healthy choice!

  4. Use Smaller Plates to Eat Less. Use smaller plates and smaller cups to help with portion control. The larger the plate, the more one eats!

  5. Fill up on Salad and Soups! Studies show that eating large quantities of low energy density foods, such as non-starchy vegetables and fruit, can keep us feeling satisfied while maintaining energy balance.

  6. Step Away from the TV. Eat at the table with family and friends, not in front of the TV (one is more likely to overeat when distracted). After the meal, play games likes charades with family and friends or go for a walk.

  7. Let Them Eat Pie! (In moderation, of course) Have a small portion of dessert. Savor it by eating slowly and mindfully.
